This is my first attempt at a HDR image. There is something about it and i'm not sure whether I like or dislike it but i found it striking non the less.
Other Places: www.flickr.com/photos/probablecause (pretty much the same images but I do post some more exprimental stuff on flickr sometimes.
If you think it is a worthy cause I would always appreciate a vote on www.coolphotoblogs.com/

I think it has worked very well in this image Kris, but cometimes it just dosent look right. great photo btw, straight lines leading us further to the top where horizontal lines take over.

@Observing: Thanks. It was the tone mapping that had me worried. So easy to get carried away and spoil everything.
thats 'sometimes'.

Wow, this is a cracking HDR, I like them when they're not too obvious and tone-mapped to the nth degree! Very reminiscent of some of Dave Nightingales HDR shots!

@DaveB: Cheers. I confess that the name Dave Nightingale was not familiar, until I clicked the link! I've seen many of his shots over the shoulder of another aminus3 member and yes, that style was what i was aiming for, so it is a great compliment to be told i'm heading in the right direction. Thanks again.
joliment composé.

Great image

@Alun Lambert: Cheers Alun.
Excellent shot! This is a great HDR image, especially for your first attempt. I haven't actually don't any HDR myself, but I've seen tons of HDR images posted online, and this one is definitely good. I like that it doesn't look overblown, but it has beautiful tones and colors and detail. good work

@danthro: Appreciate the comment. It's been one of those techniques that i've been dying to try. (crammed a lot into my first 4 months with a camera) and i've been on the look out for a specific looking scene, and to be honest when i took the exposures for this shot I was not thinking 'this is it". But thats experience for you i guess.
I agree with DaveB from above. I like HDR when it is beautiful and believable and you've done that here. I also like landscapes when they can invoke enough of the atmosphere as to make me sense what the air felt and tasted like. That may seem a little weird, but it's what I feel. This photo makes me feel the air, the crispness and the dampness perhaps. This is a great shot.

@Henry: Thanks, for this. Obviously when anyone presses the shutter, this is the kind of response that they hope the image stimulates from the viewer. All shots are never going to be to everybody's taste but I'm glad that people who did like it managed to see it. Thank you.
I like this and agree, hdr can sometimes be 'overblown' if you will - but it's another form of photographic art, so if you like it, that's all that matters!! Just curious - how did you process and from how many exposures?
15 Apr 2008 12:37pm
@Betsy Barron: Thanks Betsy, This was processed in photomatix from 13 exposures -2.0 -1.7 -1.3 -1.0 -0.7 -0.3 0.0 (then positive equivalent). Now, that is more than likely overkill, but i never took an attempt at HDR past the camera memory stage before, and decided that More was better than not enough for this one. I originally thought the image was spoilt due to a family walking onto and then toward me down the pier, but photomatix performed some kind of magic and removed them.
Good crisp lines,great colours.

@Anthony: Thanks,
I take some similarity from your response on your roller coaster shot. Some very clever people built it, some talented people painted it. And I stood at the end and took a picture. :)
I find that 'something, I'm not sure what' factor in a lot of HDR images. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt.
In this cace I think it has worked very well, most importantly, you have not siomply concentrated on HDR, you have also created a beautifully composed image. And to be compared to Dave Nightingale must be a pleasure! I'm envious - my HDR experiments are not turning out so well but I have stayed away from Photomatix so far... I will have to give it a try. And 13 exposures! Lol, it seems to have worked though.
